-Chapter 1- An Unexpected Party ~There is some sense of Good vs. Evil that appears very early in the book. Thorin told of a dragon named Smaug- going into the town of Dale and killing all of the people living there. Along with killing the people- Smaug also took lots of gold and jewels from the dwarves and the elves. The dwarves and elves never got revenge on Smaug until now. They want to search for that horrible creature. Therefore, I feel that the dwarves are Good, and Smaug and the rest of the dragons are Evil.
-Chapter 2- Roast Mutton ~In chapter 2, Bilbo and the dwarves encounter trolls. There is a sense that the 3 trolls (William, Bill, and Bert) don't like the dwarves, and they plan to kill and eat them. This results in a fight. Again, the dwarves are Good, and the Trolls are Evil. But as in every good story, the Good triumphs over Evil. -Chapter 4- Over Hill and Under Hill ~The main content in Chapter 4 is Good vs. Evil. Or in this case, dwarves verses Goblins. The Goblins that the dwarves face are mean, nasty, cruel, and ugly. To prove my point, they devoured the dwarves only type of transportation- yes, they literally ate their little ponies. The only way that the Good triumphed over Evil this time was because of Gandalf. The end of Chapter 4 ends with Bilbo falling off one of the dwarves- we never know what happened to the Goblins or the dwarves for that matter, in Chapter 4.
-Chapter 5- Riddles in the Dark ~There is a sense of Good verses Evil in the beginning of Chapter 5. This time its Bilbo verses Gollum. Gollum tricks Bilbo into playing riddles. If Bilbo doesn't answer, he will be eaten. But if Gollum doesn't answer, he will show Bilbo the way out. That is definitely Evil, and since Gollum is Evil, Bilbo is Good. Once again, Good triumphs over Evil and Bilbo escapes.
-Chapter 6- Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire ~Chapter 6 deals with Good vs. Evil in many situations. The first scenario was the dwarves verses wolves. They all heard the wolves howl and they became so frightened that they all decided to climb up a tree. The Good is the dwarves, and the Evil is the wolves. The second scenario is Goblins verses wolves. The Goblins didn't like the wolves and they soon had them in one big heap. It looked as though the Evil would triumph over Good if not for the Eagles. The Goblins and the wolves both hated the eagles- but the dwarves were very thankful for this rescue. Once again, Good triumphed over Evil- but very slimly.
-Chapter 7- Queer Lodgings ~In Chapter 7, all of the dwarves go to Beorn's house. Beorn is a skin-changer; he can turn into a human or a black bear. When Bilbo is trying to fall asleep he hears growling and scuffling which leads to think that there is something Evil lurking outside of Beorn's house. As it turns out, there was something sneaking outside; it was a Goblin and a Warg. When they are traveling to Mirkwood, Bilbo sees a black fuzzy creature that looks like a bear. Bilbo is worried but Gandalf says not to worry. Is it Evil or Good? It turns out to be Good because that bear was just protecting them from the goblins. Chapter 7 also gives a hint that a battle is going to happen, because Gandalf says to stay on the path to not stray, because bad things will happen if they do stray.
-Chapter 8- Flies and Spiders ~Chapter 8 deals with Spiders verses dwarves. Or mainly Spiders verses Bilbo. The Spiders aren't very good friends with the dwarves. In fact, they captured all of them and pursued to devour them. That plan would have worked too, if it wasn't for Bilbo, his magical ring, and his sword. Sure the dwarves tried to help, but they didn't do much. This time Evil actually surrenders to the Good, and as a result Good triumphs once again.
-Chapter 9- Barrels out of Bond ~In Chapter 9 the dwarves get taken by Elves while escaping from the Spiders, but luckily for Bilbo he had the ring so he was not seen by the Elves. The Elves then take the dwarves to the Elf King, with Bilbo following close behind. Since the dwarves are very stubborn, they do not tell the Elf King their plans or anything else . So the Elf King puts the dwarves in prison hoping that being in containment will get them to confess. Bilbo ends up being trapped inside one of the elve's caves, living off scraps and trying to think of a way to get him and the dwarves out of the caves safely without alerting any of the other Elves. Finally after days of wondering through the caves trying to of the best way to escape, he comes up with the perfect plan. He found out that there was going to be a shipment of wine delivered to the caves through a water system. His plan was to break the dwarves out of their imprisonment while all the Elves were drunk and asleep, then put him and the dwarves into the barrels and have the elves put them through the water system. His plan worked but he ended up not getting put in a barrel like the other dwarves. He ended up going through the water system without a barrel and barely making it out without drowning. Obviously, the Good is the dwarves and Bilbo, and the Evil is the elves. So Good ends up being able to escape the clutches of Evil once again.
-Chapter 12- Inside Information
~ The beginning of Chapter 12 deals with Good vs. Evil. Smaug is very Evil, and Bilbo and the dwarves are Good. Smaug tries to be nice to Bilbo, but he fails. He wants no one to take his treasure- he thinks that it all belongs to himself. Bilbo ends up taking the golden cup. So Smaug ends up flying around the mountain, and discovers the ponies, so he devours them. After a while, Smaug goes back to his den to sleep. Bilbo then goes back to where Smaug sleeps and tries to reason with him, but it only makes things worse. In Chapter 12, there is no real winner. Right now, they are still weary of each other.
-Chapter 13- Not at Home
~ In Chapter 13, Smaug is still Evil, and the dwarves and Bilbo are still Good. This time Bilbo and the dwarves act brave and steal some of Smaug's treasure. After they stole treasure Thorin leads the company out of the mountain and out the main gate. The dwarves and the hobbit don't know what to do when Smaug returns (from flying to Lake Town), so in the meantime they went to an old guard-post cavern where they ate and rested. You could say that they won, because they stole the treasure. But they didn't quite steal all of it. They don't know where Smaug is, and they need to keep alert. The Good still doesn't triumph over Evil yet.
-Chapter 14- Fire and Water
~ Chapter 14 deals mainly with Good vs. Evil. The Good is the men of the lake town Esgaroth. The Evil is the one and only Smaug the dragon. If it was not for Bard, the people would have been killed. Just before Bard was going to shoot an arrow at Smaug, a bird landed on his shoulder and told him to shoot for Smaug's left breast. He did as he was told and shot his precious black arrow. It was a direct hit, and he killed Smaug. The fierce dragon fell on the town of Esgaroth and the people were terrified. As a result, Good triumphs over Evil.
-Chapter 15- The Gathering of the Clouds
~ In Chapter 15, there is a little sense of Good vs. Evil. Bard comes to visit the dwarves, and wants to make a deal with them. He wants 1/12 of all of the treasure, and along with that he wants Thorin to give some of the treasure to the lake people. Thorin doesn't like the deal, and he shoots an arrow at Bard. Then Bard says that they can't leave the mountain until the dwarves call a truce. At this point in the action, Bard is Evil-and Thorin, Bilbo, and the dwarves are Good.
-Chapter 16- A Thief in the Night
~ Although there is not a physical scene with Good and Evil in this chapter; there is some talking about it. Bilbo takes over for Bombour with the night guard duty. He ends up straying from the mountain (with the ring on), and running into some elves. The elves take him to Bard and the Elvenking, and they discuss the horrible events that are about to happen, and make a bargain with each other. We don't actually have the battle in this chapter, but we can interpret that its coming soon.
-Chapter 17- The Clouds Burst
~ The Battle of the Five Armies takes place in this chapter. Gandalf comes back, and he warns the dwarves of the many creatures that are coming. He warns them of goblins, wolves, and wargs. In their point of view, the dwarves are Evil, and the creatures are just trying to protect what they think is theirs- they think that they are Good. After a while into the battle, the Eagles come, but they are still outnumbered. That is where he left off in this chapter.
-Chapter 18-The Return Journey
~ Tolkien picks up right were he left off. Bilbo learns that Beorn had come back as a bear, and helped defeat Bolg, and he manged to scared the goblins away. Some of the Eagles are still in the hunt, but some went back home. So Good once and for all defeats Evil. The book mentions that there was no more Evil in the mountains for many years.
-Chapter 19- The Last Stage
~ Chapter 19 only mentions Good and Evil. When Bilbo is returning home, he mentions that everything feels safer without the goblins and the wolves. Thus we have the end of the story. Like every good story, Good overcomes Evil, and the Good live a better and happier life.
